James Hartel

Artist Bio

James Hartel, A.W.S. American Artist. (b1951-)

His preferred mediums are Watercolor, Gouache, and Acrylic on paper, board, and canvas. His career, for the most part, has been focused on emotional and psychological expression, versus the academic and technical, as he is fundamentally self-taught. He lists his influences as many and diverse, including Albrecht Durer, Aubrey Beardsley, Paul Klee,
Ralph Steadman, Frida Kahlo. While extremely proud of all of his accomplishments, listed are a few of the most notable, Invited to be a part of a Group show, Surreal Fantasy, The Hansen Gallery, 70-72 Wooster Street, 1976.

The Following year, juried into the American Watercolor Society show in 1977.
The Liberty of London Gallery Regent at Carnaby Street, with its Watercolor, “Heartstrings” 1987

Solo show, The L Cafe, 189 Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn, N.Y. 1993.
In 2019 accepted as a Signature member of the American Watercolor Society, with his painting Color Wheel.
In 2020 The Racine Art Museum purchased his painting “Gravity” for its permanent collection.
