Artist Bio
A proud Virginia native, Carolyn graduated from college in South Carolina. After a year of teaching, she then chose the Maritimes of Canada for her next adventure.
As a graphite artist living on Prince Edward Island, color was not important or necessary to Carolyn's work. While visiting Charleston, pulsating with every tone imaginable, Carolyn realized she knew very little about color. Making the city her new home, she decided to continue her career by learning to colorize her work. Virginia Fouche Bolton, a well-known watercolorist whose paintings sparkled, offered lessons.
After only one class with her new mentor, Carolyn realized that only with transparent watercolor could these jewels of color be created. A devoted painter of and advocate for transparent watercolor for many years, Carolyn has enjoyed acclaim both nationally and internationally. Her many awards have gained her signature status in prestigious national societies of the United States, the National Watercolor Society (NWS), and Watercolor USA Honor Society (WHS), and the International Society of Experimental Artists (ISEA). She is an Artist of Excellence for the state's society, South Carolina Watermedia (SCWS), having served on the board for 12 years and as its president in 2011 and 2017. Her work is in private collections and museums across the country.
Carolyn is married to a Charleston native, who, she says, has plow (pronounced pluff) mud and rice running in his veins. Her three daughters all decided to explore college in the north and are now striving to return to their beloved city. Each one is a creative, talented person, though not yet a painter.
