Historically, women were to embrace fashion and beauty as their job. Dresses- typically heavy, conditioned young women into a state of cultural submissiveness. The dress soon became an icon representing the subjugation of women.
In the photographs, the materiality of the garments presents itself with a sense of ethereal quality that gives the illusion of a soft and delicate tone associated with acceptable feminine behavior. The garments, made from dried pig intestines, evoke a sense of repulsiveness and disdain towards the dresses themselves.
Drawing upon mid-century behavior expectations of women, I display myself performing an acceptable action in an unacceptable fashion by dressing in a way that exposes myself almost fully in a public setting. In this performance, I bring forward the absurd subjugation of women by choosing to make and wear garments of an absurd material. The photographs offer a satirical perspective of this absurdity through the lens of feminist liberty discourse.
