Artist Bio

Nicola Risbridger is an award-winning contemporary landscape artist, living and working in the French Alps.

Born in the Pennine Mountains in England, she has been trying to capture and represent the sheer vastness, majesty and beauty of a mountain landscape ever since. Nicola now lives on top of a hill in the French Alps, surrounded by forest and sky, where she spends a lot of time walking and looking and painting.

Nicola paints large, colourful, exuberant acrylics on canvas, often using pastels, chalk or charcoal to create texture and to build a depth and richness of tone and colour. She also works in ceramic, building solid reliefs of the natural world.

Nicola regularly holds both solo and group exhibitions in England, France and Switzerland, most recently in Geneva from November 2025 to January 2026. She works both to gallery and on commission.

Nicola has recently been awarded a Certificate of Artistic Distinction In December 2025 by Cevartgallery; in January 2026 an Emerging Virtuoso Award by Lumen Art Gallery; and the Helevtart Merit Award.

Artist Statement

I am a contemporary artist living and working in the French Alps. I was born and grew up in the Pennine mountains in England and it was the raw, earthy beauty of this mountain landscape

which first impressed upon me a desire to capture a sense of its feral beauty.

And it was of course the mountains that drew me here to the French Alps with their sheer vastness and majesty. The high peaks, the cols and the deep valleys, the busy rivers and still

lakes and the greens, browns, oranges and reds of the trees and forests and always, always the enormous skies.

There is a constant evolution and motion in the colour, light, tone and texture through time and weather and days and seasons. And it is this which I try to capture and

communicate in my landscape paintings. This, and a sense of the perspective it gives to our lives- It is all so much bigger and older and more important than we are. And with this

perspective, a real sense of peace and tranquillity.

What I try to paint is the feeling of a place in a time so you can feel how it is to be there, to smell the leaves and smoke and earth and to hear the noises it makes above the wind: a

sensory impression as much as a visual one. Through the versatility of acrylics, chalk and charcoal, I layer, blend and build textures to echo the changing energies of the natural world.

I typically work in acrylics on canvas but also use pastels, chalk and charcoal .

Recently I have been experimenting with ceramic reliefs works on a ceramic base using different plaster products to create texture and relief and to give some three dimensional

solidity in my animal works.

I hold exhibitions and accept commissions.
