Artist Bio

MJ Okawa is an artist whose work transcends cultural boundaries, blending the ancient traditions of Japanese silk painting with the bold, innovative spirit of Western design. Born into a culturally rich environment in Mountain View, California, MJ’s artistic journey has been profoundly influenced by her Japanese heritage and her experiences growing up in the diverse artistic community of the Bay Area.

From a young age, MJ was drawn to the intricate beauty of Japanese silk painting, a craft that requires both patience and precision. Under the tutelage of master artists in Berkeley, California, she mastered the traditional techniques that have become the foundation of her work. These techniques, characterized by the use of metallic gutta outlines, vibrant jewel tones, and delicate silk textures, are deeply rooted in the cultural artistry of Japan and have been a constant in her artistic evolution.

Yet, MJ’s work is not confined to tradition. As an artist living in the modern world, she has embraced the influences of Western design, infusing her silk paintings with a contemporary edge that reflects her unique perspective. This fusion of East and West is at the heart of her artistic identity, allowing her to create works that are both culturally significant and visually compelling.

A defining element of MJ’s work is her “mother palette,” a collection of colors that serve as the emotional and visual core of her art. These colors, drawn from the natural beauty of Japan and the bold designs of the West, are woven into each piece, creating a narrative that is both personal and universal. Through this palette, MJ explores the complexities of cultural identity, using color to convey the emotions and experiences that define her as an artist.

Throughout her career, MJ has exhibited her work in galleries and art shows across the United States, including notable venues such as TEN TEN Gallery (NYC), Portland on the Park (Phoenix), D'ART Gallery (Denver), Intersect Arts Gallery (St. Louis), ART Santa Fe and galleries in Denver and Georgia. Her work has been recognized for its innovative approach to traditional techniques, as well as its ability to convey deep emotional resonance through visual storytelling.

In addition to her artistic practice, MJ is a dedicated educator with over two decades of experience teaching visual and performing arts. Her passion for art extends beyond the canvas, as she actively engages in community art projects and educational initiatives, believing in the power of art to inspire and connect people across cultures.

MJ currently resides in Chandler, Arizona, where she continues to create art that reflects her dual heritage and her commitment to authenticity. Her work is a testament to the beauty of cultural fusion, offering viewers a glimpse into the intricate tapestry of her life and the world around her.
