Artist Bio

Renata Rolefes, is a Dutch-born artist living and working in Curaçao. Renata paints the Caribbean the way she actually feels it: bold, colorful, full of character and very much alive.

Renata's journey as an artist began in the Netherlands, where she trained in drawing and crafts and spent many years painting realistic portraits. In 2012, she opened her first gallery, but it was Renata's move to Curaçao in 2018 that truly transformed her work. Surrounded by turquoise water, tropical light, colorful architecture, and wonderfully expressive wildlife, her paintings became brighter, bolder, and freer. Eventually, they became unmistakably hers.

Today, Renata creates her original paintings entirely by hand in her own gallery in the heart of Willemstad. Renata works primarily with acrylic paint on canvas, combining palette knives with her own techniques to build layers of color, texture and movement. Iguanas, flamingos, hummingbirds, sea turtles and Caribbean faces regularly find their way onto Renata's canvases, not simply because they are beautiful, but because they belong to the world she lives in.

Renata's work has been exhibited internationally in the United States and across Europe and has found its way into private collections around the world. For Renata, though, art is ultimately about feeling. Renata wants her paintings to carry some of the energy, warmth, and freedom she finds in the Caribbean. A painting shouldn’t just fill an empty wall. It should make everyday life feel a little more alive.
