Charlene Asato

Artist Bio

Charlene Asato grew up in the small town of Mountain View, Hawaii, and earned a BA in Art from the University of Hawaii, then moved to the San Francisco Bay Area. She worked in bank operations, then raised a family, at the same time keeping her interest in crafts, photography, and graphic design, creating school fundraising brochures and programs. A pivotal point in her art development was in the 1980s when she started taking classes in calligraphy that introduced her to bookbinding. She soon developed a love of lettering and book arts and got excited about the potential of paper. When she moved back to Mountain View in 2003, she was determined to focus on art. She is now a visual artist engaged in a variety of activities from book arts, paper arts, calligraphy, photography, relief printing, and painting to textile arts and doll making.

Her work has been included in many juried shows in Hawaii and across the United States, and she has won awards for artist’s books and photography. Her artist’s books are included in several library collections.
