Echoes Between Retractions

Lynn Burnes is a Denver abstract and nonobjective artist who has been painting in oils, acrylics, and mixed media for over 20 years. Her work has been described by others as vibrant, exploratory, colorful, expressionist, geometric, and sometimes Cubist. Her fields of study have included mathematics, philosophy, and science, which have inspired her love of space, geometry, and time, revealed in many of her works. She has exhibited in over 40 art shows and galleries in the United States and has received several awards for artistic achievement. She has studied under various artists including Victoria Kwasinski, Joan Fullerton, Joanne Burney (Art Students League of Denver), Pat Dews, and Gretchen Norwalk. Recently she was added to the board of the Colorado Women’s Art Center and Museum.

Many of my paintings are abstract and inspired by a strong sense of place such as one experiences in nature, in an urban landscape, or even beyond, into the universe. My work explores geometric designs and composition by using odd shapes, often bright colors, and illusions of space and depth.

Painting abstractly is a passionate challenge of mine, and I like experimenting with acrylics and oils, applying them to the canvas in interpretations of such topics as time, water, nature, physics, or the cosmos. As an intuitive and exploratory painter, I work mostly in acrylics, oils, and mixed media.

My favorite inspirational art periods are the ones leading up to and including Abstract Expressionism (both American and European), from 1905 to 1950, when artists globally were diverging from traditional representation and forging new visual imagery in spite of nonacceptance and even ridicule from art critics and the general public.

My work has been shown in many metro-Denver art shows and was recently juried into several national shows.

Echoes Of Presence

Subodh Maheshwari was born in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, North India, where she learned folk art and classical music. She passionately believes: “In the threshold of my life, my present is the window to the past and a key to the future”. She acquired her degrees and studied art at Agra University, California State University, Fullerton, and the University of California, Irvine. Subodh has won numerous awards, including the regional Fellowship Award at UCI in 1986, the Bharat Gaurav Award in India in 2015, and the 60 Masters Award in 2017, 2018, and 2019. She is also registered in Marquis “Who’s Who in America”, the standard in biographical information. Her paintings have also won awards in a variety of categories, including landscape, open, all women, nature, elements, seasons, and abstract.

Subodh is a diversified artist who enjoys telling stories through her artwork, whether it is through landscape, flowers, or abstract art. Her art is a fusion of Eastern symbolism and Western composition, influenced by 16th and 17th-century Rajasthani and Mughal art, and accented by poetry, passages, and phrases in Hindi, Sanskrit, and English. She admires Georgia O’Keeffe for her floral influence and Frida Kahlo for her courage. Whether it is the serene beauty of nature, her spirituality, or the current political climate, she finds inspiration. Having a life shared between India and America, she sees the beautiful similarities, like love, which transcends all borders. Highly individual in her style, her works are described as emotional, mysterious, personal, spiritual, and humorous.

This mysterious and atmospheric painting reveals a forest scene that blurs the line between nature and spirit. Subtle human faces, some smiling and others solemn, are delicately embedded in the vertical forms of tree trunks, suggesting a quiet fusion of humanity with the natural world. Muted tones of green, grey, and soft blush flow like mist through the layered textures, giving the impression of a forest alive with memory and unseen watchers. The figures seem to emerge and vanish at once, evoking themes of presence, ancestry, and the silent sentience of nature.

Eclectic

Even at an early age, Marissa has shown an enthusiasm for illustration. She can recall spending hours creating and illustrating stories inspired by the many books her parents shared with her. That inspiration has led her to some of her greatest artistic passions, including children’s book illustration and portraiture.

Marissa earned her BFA in Illustration at the Hartford Art School in Connecticut, where she found new inspiration in her professors. While there, she received many distinctions for her work, including the best portfolio in each of her departmental portfolio reviews. She has also had the honor of having her work featured in numerous exhibitions, including the Society of Illustrators Annual Student Scholarship Competition in New York City.

Since graduating from Hartford Art School, Marissa has continued to follow her passion as a freelance illustrator and portrait artist. After completing her first children’s book illustration project, she went on to be featured in numerous publications and television appearances. Her projects have included collaborations with ESPN, as well as creating illustrations for Hartford Symphony Orchestra’s yearly concert production “Tales of Halloween”.

My artwork is very much inspired by visual storytelling. The thing I love most is capturing my subject’s likeness through vitalizing details – both on the surface of the artwork, as well as the narrative behind it.

I often use a mixed media approach combining acrylic and colored pencils. Working this way combines the freedom of laying bold washes with the tight control of drawing. As the piece is built up in many thin layers, I can carefully explore all the details. Quilting these details together as a visual story is where I find my greatest artistic passion.

Eden

Juels Pellow is an Australian artist who resides on the beautiful Gold Coast and is completely captivated by the wonderment and joy of creation and the unseen realm.

Her background in interior design & decorating, clothing design, and slow fashion has helped to feed into the creativity & uniqueness of her pieces, with a tendency to lean towards textured acrylic, watercolor, and pencil, but no medium is off limits and no style is un-touched! Most of her inspiration comes from nature or dreams and visions, where she is inspired by encouraging messages and insights from the unseen realm. She has been a featured artist in the Luxembourg art awards, and a local gallery exhibitor on the Gold Coast and is an inspiration to her art students who love how she breaks down and simplifies techniques, helping them to realize that they were born to be creative. Most of her artworks and unique business logos are held in private collections and businesses all around Australia.

Eden

Jonna Marsh was born and raised in Kansas, has been a Texan since 1997, and has been Houston-based since 2020. Having not painted since high school in 1996, she started painting again in the summer of 2024 as a means of emotional therapy. Her paintings reflect the peace of mind she desires. Most of the paintings are abstract landscapes with moody emotions.

Jonna has been commissioned to do some original paintings to test the limits of her artistic abilities. “I am excited to see how my art evolves, and the healing and beauty come out of it; there is a visible progression.” You can see a compilation of works at Jonna’s online gallery.

My practice centers on translating emotion into atmosphere. Returning to painting in 2024, I approach the studio as a space for both inquiry and healing. I am drawn to abstract landscapes where horizon, water, and sky become vehicles for mood, allowing light and darkness to coexist in tension. Tranquility with an undercurrent of drama is a recurring thread in my work.

I am intentionally expanding my range, exploring multiple styles and subjects to push the boundaries of my visual language as it evolves. Commissions and new challenges have accelerated this growth, with each painting marking a visible progression in both craft and clarity of voice. Inspired by nature—particularly water and vast open spaces—I seek to create contemplative works that invite the viewer into stillness, reflection, and quiet emotional resonance.

Edith Piaf

For as long as she can remember, artist Heather Renne has been obsessed with all things antiquated. She has produced works in mediums as diverse as photography, found objects, collage, acrylic, and oil, all while maintaining a vintage thread. Her current obsession is capturing the ethereal nature of those she portrays using a layered pentimento technique in a dark nouveau style that’s also heavily influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites.

Heather typically works on a small scale in a tiny studio within her cozy one-hundred-year-old farmhouse just blocks outside of Minneapolis. She surrounds herself with venerable relics that provide constant inspiration, as do the books and music that she devours voraciously.

Throughout my artistic endeavors and ample experimentation in various mediums, I’ve maintained an antiquarian thread that defines my style. Stories, objects, and people of the past intrigue me with their ethereal nature. My current passion lies in the intimacy of portraiture. I use oils in layers with a pentimento technique in small-scale depictions, emanating a dark Nouveau style that’s also heavily inspired by the Pre-Raphaelites.

Dearly Departed is a series that I began in October 2023. It celebrates lost luminaries in art, literature, music, and film. I choose my subjects for their contributions, inspiration, and/or beauty and construct newly imagined views, not taken from known photographs or artworks. Since what is known about these figures is only a mist of who they truly were, their portraits emerge as phantoms, leaving us with a curiosity and desire to pierce the fog surrounding them.

Egg Rebirth Circle Of Life Series: Youth And Wisdom

My name is Elena Makarov, I reside in a beautiful New Hope PA. I have been living in the US for almost all of my adulthood. I am a successful business owner, graduated with an MA from Moscow University, and got credits in finance and Art from Warton School and UPenn.

My ceramic sculptures were chosen to participate in Small Favors Clay Studio 2024 Philadelphia, 2025 Splendor of Blue MVA ART Gallery PA, and different internet exhibits, some are in private collections. My current works are also present on the Macabre Gallery website.

I take lessons and workshops at the Lisa Naples studio, which I absolutely love for its professionalism, and structure and at the same time filled with so much positive energy that enables students to express themselves with so much freedom not being afraid of being judged or banal labeled. I also work with white clay at my small home studio.

I am trying to reach deep hidden inner selves through my ceramic sculptures, to open our inner self, to find out our deeply long forgotten inner child, our childhood memories including joys and fears and even nightmares. My sculptures embrace my background (MA) in different types of literature such as international folk tales, fairytales, and classic literature. I took Art/Clay classes in my youth in Eastern Europe and at Moscow Fine Arts University.

I remember myself to be an avid sculptor constantly making figures from playdough from early childhood. I use my signature ‘Elena Ya ‘to pay tribute to my fraternal grandmother, who first taught me to love nature and seek to reach out to so many hidden secrets and treasures in it.

I always considered my sculpting as ‘child play’ and only after having accomplished myself professionally and financially in the United States, did I have time, means, and positive energy to pursue my ‘inner child play’ – sculpting as a most responsible and serious step and accomplishment in my adult life.

I try to create different figures and scenes from a depth of mind and heart; and tell stories that have been probably influenced by my favorite artworks of Dali, Chagall, Bosch and Miro, Literature by Brothers Grimm, Hesse, Kafka’s novellas and Dostoevsky, Bunin and Bulgakov reaching out to our roots of fears and inner controversies, that take roots from childhood, fighting our childhood fears and at the same time finding solace in them. Exploring the nature of femininity, modern stereotypes, and new archetypes of femininity starting from our inner childhood memories of the first walk in the forest, first swim in the ocean, first taste of grandmother’s apple pie and ice cream, first story of a fairy tale that has been read at nighttime, even first nightmare experienced in a night of sleep.

If an independent viewer would be able to see something close, dear, and even secret in my ceramic sculptures, then my ceramic creations have accomplished their first steps to future self and inner discovery and are ready to hold a viewer’s hand on a way to the scary but exciting adventures into our inner world and surrounding nature.

El Paseo

Marjorie Moskowitz, a native of St. Louis, Missouri, holds a B.S. in Business, a B.F.A., and an M.F.A. in Painting from Washington University in St. Louis. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. She has been represented by galleries, in the Midwest, the East and West Coasts. Her work has been widely collected and is part of many private and public collections. She currently lives in and maintains her studio in Southern California.

I am a landscape painter living in and maintaining my studio in southern California.

My current oil paintings of colorful, engaging, but otherwise overlooked and isolated flora are magnified to reveal their importance. My Subject matter is discovered from remote to obvious locations across the country. Coming from an orientation in abstraction, my choice to work in a focused hyper-realistic style remains ever mindful of the abstraction that exists in nature.

These paintings examine mark-making, and the nuances of color and light in nature. This process involves the close observation of many aspects of the landscape and the amplification of these images. They magnify a moment in time, and in nature, when plants are at the peak of their reproductive cycle and are fully asserting their seductive beauty/perfection/ splendor/ripeness. The focus has been on select blooms to show the importance of their smallest components.

I was born in Poughkeepsie, NY. I began my adult art journey at The Beverly Hills Adult Education Center, where I studied figure sculpting. From there, I moved on to The Brentwood Art Center in Santa Monica. Then, The Jayne Behman’s Art Center.. My watercolors were mostly inspired by high-fashion photographs of celebrities and models. This is where my love of bold, bright, joyous colors was born. I moved to NYC for 4 years and studied at The 92nd Street Y. I then studied glass mosaic art. There, I created a unique style in just my first piece. I added a relief-style dimension to my mosaics, which is rarely seen in the medium. I switched from glass to paper art. The Paper art is done either in 2 dimensions or 3. Some of the works are raised off the surface and are then box-framed. I have been awarded ribbons for my work at The Off Track Gallery in Encinitas and the Carlsbad Oceanside Art League in Carlsbad Village. My work has also been featured at The Escondido Arts Partnership, Art on 30th Street, The Visions Museum of Textile Art at Liberty Station, HMVC Gallery in NYC, KBM Gallery in LA, Art Scene West in San Diego, and The Dragon and Butterfly Gallery in LA. My works have appeared at the San Diego County Fair Fine Arts Show. In addition to my love of creating for myself, I teach many crafting and art classes. They include: Holiday Craft projects, Paper Collage Classes, Gourd Painting, Handbag Design, Hand Painted Glass, Stenciling, Paper Flower Classes, Stained glass on glass design, Decoupage on glass and paper mache, and Acrylic and Decoupage classes.

I have worked with clay, watercolor, stained glass mosaics, collage, acrylic, and decoupage and acrylic on canvas. I teach many types of classes at Vi La Jolla Village. My works have appeared in gallery shows in Palm Springs, NYC, Palm Desert, CA, Escondido, Encinitas, North Park, Liberty Station, and other galleries in San Diego.

I have ribboned in many art shows and have appeared in many juried shows, including the San Diego County Fair Fine Arts shows.

I also teach crafting classes. My passion is to inspire others and to create joyful and beautiful things.
