The Doorway

I was born and raised in NYC but mostly in The Bronx. I attended CCNY where I graduated with a BS in Mathematics and an MA in Mathematics Education. I taught high school mathematics in The Bronx. I have always been interested in the arts and started writing poems and playing guitar at age 19. I studied poetry under Professor Robert O’Clair. I studied guitar at The Guitar Workshop. I studied painting and drawing at SUNY in Purchase. Recently, I have had paintings and/or drawings in numerous online shows and paintings in 8 live group shows. I have had many poems published in literary magazines, in books, at HVMOCA, and self-published a children’s book, ”Mr. Fine Goes to the Eye Doctor”. My poem “Friends” was published recently(2022) at HVMOCA in written form and in audio in the “Writing Off the Walls” project. My principal artistic interest has been abstract painting and drawing for the last 9 years, but I have written many poems as well. I live in Putnam County, NY.

My work in fine arts has principally been in 2 classes of abstract paintings: oils and water-based paints. However, I have completed numerous works in a drawing. I focus on color, texture, methodology of delivery, and composition. In composition, I am interested in positive space and negative space as well. I believe the painting is a manifestation of my emotional state of both conscious and unconscious feelings.

The paintings I have entered for your consideration in this show are related to the year “2022”, specifically the impact of the pandemic. I would say many artistic works completed with respect this year express some combination of fear, and grief. hope and relief.

The Dream Land

Li Xintong loved to paint since she was a little girl. She came to know Mr. Pei Fabang one day and started to learn pastel painting. Now she has learned pastel painting for 2 years. Her painting “ River View” won the first prize in the National Youth Painting and Calligraphy Art Exhibition in 2023. Her other painting”Sunset” was shortlisted for the Venice International Youth Art Competition, and won the second prize in the exhibition at the Qingu Art Museum in Shanghai in March 2024.

I started to paint with the pastel two years ago. I love pastel painting because of its vibrant color, special texture, and expressive strokes. I love to travel around and explore the beauty of the landscape. I came upon a village in the forest in Qinghai Province recently. I always dreamed of settling down in a beautiful place like that. It’s my dream home. I immediately captured the moment with the camera. When I returned home, I painted it with the pastels. I named it “The Dream Land “. I will continue to paint with the pastels for the rest of my life.

The First Dive

Danette Moran, now living in the coastal area of North Carolina, is an abstract artist who receives her inspiration from living near the beach, the mountains in Lake Tahoe and Colorado, and the Arizona desert. Her paintings are focused on alcohol ink, acrylic ink, and paint with other enhancements to bring out the texture of nature and life itself. She claims her artistic talent started with a 35mm film camera, and the hours spent in a dark room developing that film. Her goal is to bring out a feeling, a vision, or a thought that is new to the observer; and to find a sense of calm and personalization when viewing her work.

What do I want my art to say to you? Since I resonate with the Earth and the colors of nature, I want the viewer to feel peaceful, intrigued, captivated, or moved in some way. I am going to tap into a place in your soul, and I will never know what my art will say to you, because it’s in your heart and mind. My goal is to continue to make art that can get deep inside your internal vision and create something for you that makes you want to return to that place over and over again.

Andrea’s current art projects are about play and exploration. She lives in a vibrant arts community; her works reflect the relationship of art forms, theater, poetry, dance, and music. She occupies herself with “what if” questions to generate creative imagery visualizing her musings and sensations in the present.

My current art projects are primarily influenced by my passion for play and exploration. I experiment with color schemes, curious shapes, light patterns, varied lines, dynamic compositions, my collection of digital materials, and texture brushes. I occupy myself with “what if” questions to generate creative imagery: What if I captured the flight patterns of my backyard birds? What if I condensed the colors of my favorite Florida beach into a single image? What if I could recreate the feeling of silk through colors? What if I merged different poses of a figure into a single image? What shapes and patterns would result from layering objects in various blend modes? Another main influence comes from observing other artists at work and visiting art museums wherever I travel. I focus on the finer details of underpaintings, blending, brush strokes, paint mediums, and varnishes. I photograph textures and patterns that inspire me to try something new in my work. I usually have the best time when I am left behind in a museum to roam in circles around the art.

She is also working on three projects that will take several years, The aim is to publish a book.

Photography is painting with light. When I shoot landscapes or flowers, I am calm and put myself in an almost meditative state. Then I feel at one with the environment. I chose this flower in the town where I grew up. Or did the flower choose me? Anyways, I was attracted by its beautiful purple color. Then, getting closer, I discovered different structures, textures. I felt invited to explore. At one point, I felt ready that the eye, the heart, and the soul were aligned.

The Flower Concert

Born in coastal Southern California in 1960 and living in the Mojave Desert, I spent my early years exploring nature. The seascapes of native wildflowers which sprouted after the Spring showers mesmerized my imagination and firmly implanted a hold on my love of color.

Traveling the world in later years, my appreciation of the wonders of the sea was awakened. Becoming a keen diver while living in Micronesia and Australia fostered my passion for the underwater gardens of the reef and further reinforced my love of all things bold, bright, and energetic.

I am a self-taught artist not afraid to indulge my own freedom of expression. I paint both in oils and acrylics, however, mostly favor acrylics as they continually challenge me and I love the desired effects achieved in working quickly with them. I’m inspired at the moment and it’s this type of discovery that truly excites me. Deliberate strokes of the brush, too, or fingers in conjunction with paint applied straight from the tube to canvas provide a fundamental fulfillment. That freedom of the inner child in me creates whimsical works which make me smile as if in my own hidden world. Manipulating paint onto a blank canvas is very rewarding and being engaged in the metamorphosis to capture a moment of form, texture, and movement never before seen is my Nirvana.

When the outcome of a completed painting inspires someone to reflect inward eliciting feelings of intrigue, warmth, and joy, and most importantly producing a smile I know that the final verdict is a success. I aspire to provide colorful artwork to viewers and collectors with the hope that they too will be as delighted as I am and raise a warm smile every time they capture a gaze at one of my paintings.

My work is filled with passionate energy, strong movement, and vibrant color. My subjects are fragments of the many memories of places seen or explored in nature throughout my travels.  Many walk along the rock-pooled shoreline wondering what was beneath the surface, the bike ride escapes through the hills and trees looking for adventure and always wondering what was beyond the skyline. Several people who view my works comment that my paintings make them feel good. Some have said that I must be happy inside myself.  That is very satisfying as I do choose to be happy and hope that is reflected in my work and brings a smile to others.

I love to paint the lights dancing on the surface of a lake or sea, the eyes and faces of interesting people, special moments of our days or of our old history, and everything that inspires me. I admire and care for nature, and try to capture its beauty on my canvas. We have to preserve our nature as it is for the next generations as well.

The Gangs All Here

Joanne Chase-Mattillo was born in the beautiful Midwestern University town of Ann Arbor, Michigan. While the natural surroundings of her childhood were inspiring, the beauty of nature surrounding Los Angeles was the impetus for her entrance into the field of photography. Joanne began vigorously studying photography and other art arenas to hone her skills as a visual artist. In 2000, she graduated from California State University, Los Angeles with a Master of Fine Arts (MFA). She is now a full-time artist.

In addition to color and black and white film, Joanne shoots digitally and employs the techniques of infrared imaging and enjoys creating 3D anaglyphs to be viewed with red/blue lenses. As an extension of photography, she has branched out to do videos and has a YouTube Channel, THE VIDEO ART OF JOANNE CHASE-MATTILLO. Along with nature, Joanne frequently photographs female and male subjects at themed studio shoots. She often uses the photograph of models combined with images of her nature photography to create unique photo montages.

Joanne has exhibited throughout California, nationally, in Korea, France, England, Switzerland, Scotland, Greece, Spain, Germany, Japan, Belgium, Holland, Taiwan, Brazil, Dubai, and Italy.

As a photographer, I am constantly in search of iconic imagery. The craftsmanship and perfection of classic Hollywood cinema have always been an inspiration and a goal I seek to achieve in my photography. While enjoying the technology of the present and how it has enhanced photography, I am very drawn to recreate photographs that reference the best of the past. It is my intent that the viewer of the images I create will be taken out of the everyday present to a magical place where, at any time, they would dream of going. Whether photographing people or nature, I strive to honor the best and the beauty of all that I have an opportunity to capture with my camera.

Summer days are the dream moments of the year that are looked forward to in dreary seasons. The beach, pool, lakes, and oceans draw all to embrace the sun and beat the heat. When we think of summer, we embrace all that the warmth of the sun brings.
