Artist Bio
David Antreasian Biography 2026
My 50+ year obsession with photography began with an introductory class at the University of New Mexico in 1971 and later study with Wayne Lazorik and Betty Hahn. Favorite photographic artists from the past include Man Ray, Ralph Gibson, Olivia Parker, Jan Groover, Frantisek Drtikol, and Jaroslav Rossler. However, I was always strongly attracted to surrealist painters of the past - notably Magritte, Miró, Dalí, De Chirico, and more recently Leonora Carrington, Kay Sage, and Dorothea Tanning.
My work today has changed dramatically in content. For 30 years I made traditional Black and White Silver Gelatin prints in a wet darkroom, and I would often hand-apply oils over the prints or use other alternative process techniques. My first public showing was in 1991, and after winning a competition a few years later, I had my first solo show in NYC. In 1995, I won the Willard Van Dyke Photography Award and had my second solo show at the Megan Fox gallery in Santa Fe, NM. In 2004, I dismantled my last darkroom and have since worked in a digital home studio.
During the COVID lockdown, I began creating work as a mixed-media collage process. Though I would not describe this work as “pure” photography, I find this method of working liberating and continue to use the technique today. Thus, my subject matter is now mostly abstract/surreal imagery constructed within a studio setting.
My work is held by The Albuquerque Museum of Art and History, The New Mexico Museum of Art, The Capitol building in Santa Fe, The City of Albuquerque, Central NM Community College, Navajo Technical University, and many private collectors.
